Simple Summer Car Care Tips

East Bay Auto Body Shop Oakland, CAEast Bay Auto Body Repair Shop’s Top Tips for Summer Car Maintenance

Summer is a time for vacations, road trips and more time with the kids home on summer break. With the increase in daily activities, car maintenance is usually the last thing to come to mind, even though it’s likely being used more.

Our East Bay auto body shop discusses the four most important things to do to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape this summer.

  1. Inspect the brakes and fluids

Since high temperatures can cause trouble for your car’s battery, it’s crucial that you frequently clean the battery terminal. This small step will also ensure that the chances of encountering performance problems are minimized as much as possible. Also check fluids such as oil, windshield wiper fluid, coolant, power steering, etc. and keep them at an optimal level. Running out of oil and blowing your engine on your next road trip would be detrimental for your summer vacation.

  1. Monitor tire pressure

“Not too much – not too little” is the motto to follow when checking your vehicle’s tire pressure. Driving with an overinflated or underinflated tire can lead to a popped or deflated tire as its pressure increases with the rising temperature, so make sure your it’s at the right pressure level before taking a long trip.

  1. Replace the engine belt

The Serpentine Belt that runs between the alternator, fan, and other components starts to wear out over time. It may become loose, begin to squeal, and even break without warning. Just like the belt on your vacuum, the tension and alignment needs to be just right for it to work properly. If you notice any cracks or damages in the belt, consider taking it in for a replacement.

  1. Check on the air conditioning system

Now that summer is here, you rely on your car’s air conditioning system to stay cool and survive the heat. If the A/C system has aged and isn’t as cool as it used to be, it might be leaking Freon into the environment. Use a leak sealing product and the refrigerant chargers to fix these leaks before it causes any significant harm to the environment.

Whether you drive a brand new BMW or a 1997 Honda Civic, the amount of care every vehicle deserves is the same. Follow these four simple tips and you’ll be ready for that summer road trip without any unpleasant surprises along the road.
