Over the years, there have been tremendous leaps in the safety features installed in vehicles. These range from automatic braking systems, to front- and rear-mounted cameras and collision avoidance systems. Collision avoidance systems help vehicles detect obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles, anticipate collisions, and automatically steer the vehicle away or apply the brakes.

Collision warning systems have been around for quite some time and help drivers avoid accidents and subsequent trips to the auto body shop, especially on high-end cars. However, in recent times, we’ve seen them make their way into more economical vehicles.

How Auto Collision Avoidance Systems Work

Essentially, an auto collision system is paired with the adaptive cruise control system for real-time information transfer. Both systems use a scanner mounted within the car’s grill to evaluate the distance from obstacles in your vehicle’s path. The scanner could use a camera, radar, or a laser sensor–sometimes all three–to detect possible collisions.

These sensors are constantly evaluating the physical environment around your vehicle and sending this information to the vehicle’s computer system. The system then continually analyzes and calculates the distance between you and potentially hazardous objects.

The steps your system takes after it detects a collision depends on its type. For instance, when your vehicle detects a forward collision, it may react by pre-charging the brakes to reduce or prevent impact, fully engage the braking system, or sound an alarm.

Popular Collision Avoidance Systems

While this list is not exhaustive, it will give you an insight into the most common collision avoidance systems.

  • Rear cameras and vehicle parking assist – rear-view cameras help detect collisions from the back. It also helps the driver steer the vehicle into place while parking.
  • Pedestrian detection – this system detects and warns you if a person strays into your vehicle’s path. This is especially useful for populated areas.
  • Lane departure warning (LDW) – this system uses sensors that evaluate your car’s distance from either lane line. It will alert you once you stray.
  • Drowsiness detection – this system detects whether you are falling asleep or tired by comparing your current steering behavior to the behavior recorded at the beginning of the journey.
  • Blind-spot monitoring – this feature detects vehicles in your blind spot. More advanced systems apply brakes on that particular side of the vehicle to help avoid colliding with that vehicle.
